KS4 Subject: Design and Technology
What topics will you study in KS4 Design and Technology?
All students will study the core content of the AQA Design and Technology specification but students will opt for In-Depth study of either Timbers or Textiles.
Year 10 Component 1 Core Theory Content:
- New and emerging technologies
- Energy generation and storage
- Developments in new materials
- Systems approach to designing
- Mechanical devices
- Materials and their working properties
Additionally:
- In-Depth study of timbers and manufactured boards
- In-Depth study of textiles
Year 10 Component 2 NEA Skills Practice:
- Delivered through a range of practical mini-projects in both Timbers and Textiles
- NEA Mini Design Folder
- Introduction to NEA Contextual Challenge Design Task
Year 11:
- Paper 1 - Written paper exam practice
- Non Examined Assessment (NEA)

How will you be assessed during the course?
- Paper 1: Written Examination: 2 hours, 100 marks, 50% of the qualification
- Component 2: NEA (Non Exam Assessment): 100 marks, 50% of the qualification
How can you help your child excel in this subject?
- Ensure your child has a quiet working environment at home to study independently.
- Ensure all school work and homework is complete.
- Encourage regular and consistent use of Knowledge Organisers and revision aids.
- Remind your child to attend all interventions.
- Encourage your child to question, wonder and design.
- Make good use of all extra-curricular opportunities both in and out of school - The Design Museum, our workshop opportunities, our extensive clubs programme.
