Haggerston School library is located at the heart of the school and serves as a vibrant learning hub supporting all members of the school community’s academic and personal development. It provides a welcoming and inclusive environment that fosters academic excellence, independent inquiry, and a sustained passion for reading. As both a physical space and a centre of intellectual engagement, the library helps students become confident, reflective learners and active participants in their own learning journeys.

The library is dedicated to fostering a love of reading, supporting academic achievement, and empowering students with the skills needed to grow and thrive beyond the classroom in a nurturing environment.

The Haggerston school library aims to:

  • Provide a warm and welcoming learning environment for both staff and students.
  • Promote reading for pleasure to support literacy, creativity, and personal development.
  • Support teaching and learning by maintaining a wide range of relevant, up-to-date resources that support students’ personal growth, including materials on mental health, well-being, careers, and life choices.
  • Create engaging inclusive displays and events linked to literary themes, curriculum topics and global events that encourage use of the library.
  • Develop students’ research and critical thinking skills through access to diverse, high-quality resources.

Student Librarians

Student librarians 2023

The library actively encourages student participation in its activities and management to foster a sense of ownership and responsibility. Opportunities are provided for students to contribute to displays, suggest new resources, and support peer reading initiatives. The Librarian appoints Student Librarians who assist with the organisation of books, promotion of reading events, and mentoring younger students in library use.

These roles develop leadership, teamwork, and organisational skills while ensuring that the library reflects the interests and needs of its users. Student input is valued in shaping the collection, events, and displays, helping to create a welcoming, dynamic, and inclusive learning environment for all.
